The Meeting Place was a popular weekly radio program in the Shina language, broadcast in Gilgit, Pakistan, during the early 1980s. Shina, an Indo-Aryan language, is primarily spoken, with efforts to create a writing system based on the Urdu script dating back to the 1960s, resulting in limited literary works. The program's author, Mohammad Amin Zia, is a notable writer and poet from Gilgit, known for his contributions in Shina and Urdu, including a collection of proverbs published with a German translation in 2008. This collection features seven scripts intended for performance, marking the first effort by a native Shina speaker to address everyday life issues in a colloquial style reflective of the 1980s. The discussions involve three speakers—a young man, an old man, and a school teacher—who explore topics such as the generation gap, religious and ethical standards, hygiene, and environmental welfare, often infused with humor. The text is presented in Shina with interlinear English rendering and a free translation. Additionally, a glossary of Shina words used in the texts is included, enhancing the reader's understanding of the language and context.
