Más información sobre el libro

In the last three decades, a “new physiognomy of the continent” has emerged, driven by political and economic changes. Ewa Trafna's visit to Detroit inspired her to explore themes of abandoned properties, industrial wastelands, and halted urban communication in once-thriving cities. This experience resonated with her personal history and the decline of Polish and German cities such as Łódź, Bytom, Wałbrzych, Oberhausen, Bitterfeld, Eisenhüttenstadt, and Berlin (Oberschöneweide). Trafna’s series reflects the memory of Detroit while addressing broader geopolitical issues, illustrating how architecture serves as a testament to both prosperous and challenging times. As urban landscapes evolve, they often undergo whitewashing, repurposing, and transformation, which may go unnoticed but are captured by artists like Trafna. Her work highlights the role of art in the processes of urban forgetting and remembering, inviting viewers to pause and reconsider the transitional state between past and future, embracing both its melancholy and potential. The project is enriched by contributions from Uta Schorlemmer, Alfrun Kliems, Aleksandra Hirszfeld, and Will Wittig.
