Más información sobre el libro

This incisive text offers an undergraduate-level course in modern optics for physics, technology, and engineering students. The first half focuses on classical physical optics, while the second half delves into the quantum nature of light. Initial chapters cover the propagation of light waves, phase and group velocities, and the vectorial nature of light. Subsequent chapters explore partial coherence and coherence length in interference, multiple-beam interference including Fabry-Perot interferometry, and multilayer-film theory. The text also addresses diffraction and holography, as well as light propagation in various materials, including crystal and nonlinear optics. Later chapters introduce the quantum theory of light, elementary optical spectra, and the theory of light amplification and lasers. A brief overview of ray optics leads to the matrix method for analyzing optical systems and laser resonators. Throughout, numerous applications of lasers in optics are integrated. The author expects students to have completed an intermediate course in electricity and magnetism and possess advanced mathematical skills beyond calculus. Each chapter concludes with a list of problems and selected answers for classroom use.
