Beginner, published in 1995, is a short course tailored for absolute beginners or students with minimal English, aimed at young adults and adults. The course is gently paced, featuring a clearly defined grammatical and lexical syllabus to prevent learner overload. It includes grammar, vocabulary, functional language, and pronunciation components. New language is introduced gradually, reinforced through substantial controlled practice to build confidence. Grammar is presented in tabular form at the end of each unit, accompanied by exercises for self-assessment. Despite its low level, the course incorporates simple skills work and manageable communicative activities to enhance interactive skills and make learning meaningful. Each unit features an 'Everyday English' section that practices common expressions and survival English for daily situations, providing a solid foundation for students preparing for New Headway Elementary and other elementary courses. The Student's Book consists of 12 units, with two Stop and Check revision sections, a grammar summary, and a word list. The Workbook contains exercises to practice and extend language skills, along with free writing exercises and additional revision sections. The Teacher's Book offers guidance, teaching ideas, photocopiable material, and an answer key. Optional audio resources include recordings for Workbook exercises and listening material from the Student's Book.
