Jarka Burian was, for decades, the primary western scholar on Czech theatre. First generation American with relatives still in Czechoslovakia, Burian spoke and read Czech fluently, and brought expertise in theatre history and production together with his language and culture to provide numerous books and articles that exposed the accomplishments of Czech theatre artists to the English-reading world for more than forty years. From the mid 1960s through the mid 2000s, Burian and his wife Grayce Susan Burian, also a teacher of theatre, spent extended periods in Czechoslovakia, later the Czech Republic, witnessing not only great theatre, but also major political and cultural events and upheavals.
