A 3-year English course designed for students in upper secondary schools in southern Europe, taking students from false beginner to intermediate level. The course comprises a student's book, a workbook, a teacher's book and a set of cassettes at each level. The content and style should appeal to 14 to 17 year a full colour photo strip based on the lives of a group of 17 and 18 year olds in South London presents language in a natural context. The reading passages are mostly authentic and present a wide range of contemporary issues of concern to young people. Additional reading texts in the workbook provide a background to English culture and unscripted recordings provide the basis of task listening exercises. All language that is taught is practised in terms of the students' own experience. "Mode" has an integrated structural/functional syllabus which requires the use of all the four skills. In the later books there is a special vocabulary development section. In order to address the problem of large classes with widely ranging levels of ability, there are additional exercises at the back of the book. There is systematic presentation of key grammar points, both through an active grammar section in the student's book and a complete grammar reference section in the workbook.
