Temple of Heaven covers an area of 273 hectares, and its main constructions have different characteristics and highly symbolic meanings. It was built in the eighteen years of Ming Yongle (1420) as the shrine for emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties to worship the heaven and pray for harvest. Many ancient Chinese astronomical concepts, such as ""heaven is round and the earth square"", are embodied fully in Temple of Heaven.
