This study examines process-oriented writing instruction and writing conferences, a form of essay teaching that has established itself primarily in elementary schools. The idea of eight to ten-year-old children participating as members of a conference may initially seem strange. Some might argue that while "writing conference" sounds impressive, there is ultimately not much substance behind it. After clarifying the term "writing conference," the study aims to highlight both the possibilities and weaknesses of this form of essay instruction.
