My Years of Bush

A Frenchman in New York (1985-2004)

Más información sobre el libro

Sometime during the year 2000, when G.W. Bush's run for the U.S. presidency on the Republican ticket was announced, and it failed to collectively crack the public up, I knew right then that there was something wrong going on. Not so much W's candidacy; rather, the fact that it did not crack the public up. When, in early 2001, G.W. Bush became the Supreme Court's choice against the will of the people, I was expecting widespread riots all over the land. Nothing happened, and everyone seemed to take it in stride, but I took it personally. America had cheated on me. I lived my middle age years in New York City between 1985 and 2004. Somewhere along the way, I acquired U.S. citizenship, but my wife Reiko, whom I met there right after 911, convinced me to move us back to Paris in late 2004, bthough not until I cast my "Anybody but Bush" vote, alas to no avail. I wrote these short pieces in 2005 in Paris while Dubbya was in his second term, to keep alive the memory of my New York years and I needed a title. The country has since slipped much further down toward perdition. It's now 2022, almost 20 years later and I could as well have "replaced" all the "Bushes" in this text by as many "Trumps". But it would lack biographical accuracy. (Update 2022: I missed ol' Dubbya during the Trump years. I even wished his bro Jeb had made it instead.)
