This collection includes local histories, songs, poems, letters, memoirs, religious-legal writings, and official documents, illuminating aspects of politics, culture, spirituality, economic activities, gender, and daily life in this vast grassland. The volume emphasizes the voices and experiences of ethnic non-Russians who lived in the area that eventually became part of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. The texts have been translated from both published and unpublished materials in Kazakh, Tatar, Bashkir, and Russian, making their English debut.
