This fourth edition of a work on architecture which was first published in 1970 presents a record not of great houses or great churches, but of the manor houses, farmhouses, cottages, barns, stables, mills, inns, shops and early industrial buildings close to the domestic scale that, up to the 19th century, were built according to local traditions. The various materials and methods of construction used for walls, roofs, staircases, windows, doorways and other features are covered, with illustrations relating directly to the text.
