This compelling group of essays on the new kind of poverty in post-communist Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, and Slovakia is based on the findings of surveys conducted in those countries in 1999- 2000 by SzelTnyi (Yale U., New Haven, Conn.), his graduate students, and colleagues. The topics of the seven articles include dynamics of poverty, the feminization of poverty, the social construction of the Roma ethnicity, and social determinants of poverty in the countries surveyed.
