Der grammatische Status von be ist bisher weitgehend ungeklärt. Termini wie z. B. auxiliary verb grenzen be von Vollverben ab, setzen es aber mit dem perfektiven have gleich. Die häufig angenommene Unterteilung in wenigstens vier verschiedene be -Typen: copula, passive, progressive und sogar modal – be ist darüber hinaus weder empirisch noch theoretisch gerechtfertigt. Hier wird eine eigene, neue Analyse von be im Government & Binding Rahmen entwickelt, die das Zusammenspiel von u. a. tense, modals, perfektivem have , Vollverben und be erfaßt. Die Funktion von be läßt sich auf ein generelles 1:1 Prinzip zurückführen, das Flexionsinformationen auf syntaktische Strukturen bezieht. Be wird in jedem Vorkommen als dieselbe funktionale Kategorie (AGR(eement)) motiviert.
