Optimization Under Stochastic Uncertainty
Methods, Control and Random Search Methods

Focusing on optimization techniques, this book explores incorporating stochastic parameter variations to reduce costs in corrective measures. It addresses common deterministic substitute problems, emphasizing two key strategies: minimizing expected primary costs while adhering to reliability and deterministic constraints, and minimizing total expected costs, which include construction and design expenses, within the same constraints. The methods presented aim to enhance decision-making in practical applications by integrating uncertainty into the optimization process.

Focusing on optimization under uncertainty, this book explores how to derive robust solutions that remain effective despite variations in random model parameters. It discusses the transformation of stochastic optimization problems into deterministic equivalents, utilizing probability distributions and decision theory concepts. By addressing the challenges posed by randomness, it provides a framework for computing solutions that maintain their integrity in practical applications.

Optimization problems arising in practice usually contain several random parameters. Hence, in order to obtain optimal solutions being robust with respect to random parameter variations, the mostly available statistical information about the random parameters should be considered already at the planning phase. The original problem with random parameters must be replaced by an appropriate deterministic substitute problem, and efficient numerical solution or approximation techniques have to be developed for those problems. This proceedings volume contains a selection of papers on modelling techniques, approximation methods, numerical solution procedures for stochastic optimization problems and applications to the reliability-based optimization of concrete technical or economic systems.
This volume features a selection of papers from the GAMM/IFIP Workshop on Stochastic Optimization: Numerical Methods and Technical Applications, held at the Federal Armed Forces University Munich from May 29-31, 1990. The workshop aimed to unite scientists from Stochastic Programming and various engineering disciplines where Mathematical Programming models are commonly used, such as optimal structural design, power dispatch, and acid rain abatement. The discussions focused on the impact of incorporating inherent randomness in data, advocating for Stochastic Programming over traditional Mathematical Programming models to achieve more reliable solutions without increased costs. An international program committee was formed, including members from Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, and Austria. Despite a limited number of participants for technical reasons, the workshop covered a wide range of topics. The lectures provided theoretical insights into stochastic programming, introduced new computational methods, analyzed existing solution techniques, and explored applications across diverse fields, including ecology and energy demands. Additionally, the presentations highlighted several unresolved methodological challenges.
