Der vorliegende Band gewinnt über die Vita Papst Gregors IX. und in Auseinandersetzung mit etlichen weiteren Quellen grundlegende Einsichten in den Pontifikat Gregors IX. Untersucht werden die Entstehung- und Überlieferungsgeschichte der Vita, die engen Bezüge zur Papstgeschichtsschreibung des Mittelalters, die programmatische Ausrichtung auf die Herrschaft im Kirchenstaat, die Bedeutung der beiden Exkommunikationen Friedrichs II. im Gedankengang der Vita und nicht zuletzt die Stilisierung von päpstlichem Protagonisten und kaiserlichem Antagonisten. Es wird deutlich, dass die Vita dem Papsttum in erster Linie als eine Legitimations- und Verteidigungsschrift in den Krisenjahren 1239/40, und weiter als ein Reservoir für politische, finanzielle, rechtliche und liturgische Antworten diente. Gregor IX. prägte die Heiligkeit des Papstes, die Territorialpolitik und das eschatologische Gedankengut der römischen Kurie nachhaltiger, als der vorherigen Forschung bewusst war.
