Von Cornelius Nepos, dem Biographen, dem Catull seine Gedichtsammlung widmete, ist leider nur ein kleiner Ausschnitt seines Werkes erhalten geblieben. Die Lebensbeschreibung griechischer Feldherren, des Karthagers Hannibal und der Römer Cato und Atticus und vor allem der angebliche Brief der Mutter der Gracchen wollen dabei weniger eine detaillierte Sammlung von Einzelheiten der jeweiligen Viten darbieten, als die Leistungen und das Versagen der vorgestellten Helden in ihrer jeweiligen historischen Situation beleuchten und bewerten. Der Autor, der in seiner Zeit der römischen Literatur neue Wege öffnete, wurde bis zum 19. Jahrhundert hoch geschätzt, dann verworfen und erst Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts wiederentdeckt. Die erhaltenen Biographien von dem Zeitgenossen Caesars und Ciceros sind eine Quelle für die römische Geschichtsauffassung des 1. Jahrhunderts v. Chr.
Nepos sa podujal zostaviť súbežné životopisy významných osobností, v ktorých porovnával znamenitých Rimanov s podobnými mužmi Grécka a ostatného sveta. Z jeho diela O vynikajúcich mužoch, zahŕňajúceho životopisy významných mužov vo všetkých oblastiach života, sa nám zachovala len jedna úplná kniha Životopisy znamenitých vojvodcov cudzích národov, obsahujúca životopisy 22 vojvodcov, a dva životopisy z knihy o významných historikoch. Nepotove Životopisy sa tešili veľkej obľube a neskôr ovplyvnili aj Plutarcha, ktorý v podobnom duchu zostavil svoje paralelné Životopisy. Táto publikácia obsahuje všetky Nepotove zachované životopisy a dopĺňa ju úvod Ivana Janeka.
