Der französische Mediziner Claude Bernard (1813-1878) war einer der brillantesten Forscher auf dem Gebiet der Physiologie, er war ein großer Experimentator und Beobachter. Früh kam er unter den Einfluss von Francois Magendie, dem Vater der experimentellen Physiologie in Frankreich. Bernards besondere Leistung lag in der Entdeckung der Funktion von Bauchspeicheldrüse und Leber bei Verdauungsvorgängen. Er befasste sich aber auch mit der Hirnforschung. Seit 1854 lehrte Bernard an der Sorbonne in Paris, wo für ihn extra ein Lehrstuhl für Allgemeine Physiologie eingerichtet worden war. Bereits ein Jahr später wurde er Nachfolger seines Lehrers Magendie am Collège de France.
