V júni 1967 vo svojich sedemnástich rokoch Joni prežila tragédiu, ktorá od základu zmenila jej život. Pri kúpaní v jednom z morských zálivov si poranila chrbticu a telo, ruky i nohy jej celkom ochrnuli. Koľko vnútorných bojov a bolesti prežila, kým ju posadili na invalidný vozíček, kým pochopila, že jej neostáva nič iné, iba ísť životom, ktorý je celkom iný, ako bol doteraz, ako doterajšie predstavy a sny o budúcnosti. „Odmietam strácať čas zúfalstvom"— také našla východisko.
