Recollections--What remains? The painter and ceramist-sculptor Beate Höing (b. 1966, lives and works in Coesfeld and Münster) creates works of art whose aesthetic is deeply informed by the ornamentation and manual techniques of folk art. Der Begriff „Kosak Mamaj“ bezeichnet einen Typus von Kosakendarstellungen, der sich in der ukrainischen Volkskunst im 17.-19. Jahrhundert verbreitete und Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts zum nationalen Symbol avancierte. Im Zuge der Wiederentdeckung der Volkskunst durch die künstlerische Avantgarde wurde Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts auch das Thema des „Kosak Mamaj“ vielfach aufgegriffen. Das Zentralmotiv des Bildes, seine Komposition und Elemente, aber auch die allgemeine Thematik wurden zur Grundlage für vielfältige Experimente in Malerei und Grafik, Theater und Kino, abhängig davon, welche Ziele die jeweiligen Künstler verfolgten und im Auftrag welcher politischen Mächte sie wirkten.
