This modest booklet examines the architecture of the new Experimenta Science Centre in Heilbronn from three different angles: In terms of urban history, this building - which was designed by sauerbruch hutton - simultaneously stands as an icon and a tool for change that accompanies its city into a new economy of knowledge. As a construction, it follows its own experimental path, both in organisational, structural and ecological terms. Finally, the project is a late offspring of a typological family of spiral buildings which stretches from antiquity via the modern movement up to the very present. 00All three perspectives are captured in Florian Heilmayer?s concise and lucid texts and are illustrated by numerous photos and drawings. Both for Experimenta visitors as well as other interested contemporaries this little pamphlet is a must.

    • The Turn of the Century

A Reader about Architecture in Europe 1990-2020

A concise reader on European architecture's defining forces of the past 30 years German designer Matthias Sauerbruch (born 1955) and British designer Louisa Hutton (born 1957) have asked a diverse group of authors to reflect on the various conditions that have shaped the conception, production and circulation of European architecture over the past 30 years. While the essays collected in this volume include observations of Sauerbruch Hutton's buildings, the scope of the authors' conclusions about European design trends far exceeds the work of this particular agency. The text is supplemented by a photographic essay by Finnish artist Ola Kolehmainen, offering readers an immersive experience of the firm's most impressive accomplishments.

    • Lars Mueller presents a second major monograph on 'Sauerbruch Hutton, Archive 2', that follows on from the previous Archive that recorded the practice's work from its inception in 1989 to 2006. Archive 2 includes detailed descriptions of 70 works from the period between 2006 and 2015 as well as six essays by the architects and a complete register of all projects. The current compendium traces the development of the office's architectural practice and thinking through a series of completed buildings, works in progress and projects that, as yet, remain unrealised. The book illuminates its strategies of sustainable design, its multiple interventions in the post-industrial cityscapes and the unfolding of an architectural language full of sense and sensuality that reacts to its physical and social context, as well as to functional, technical, spatial, and sculptural considerations. The book reveals Sauerbruch and Hutton's understanding of their profession as an ongoing process of research into presence and future, and is the only comprehensive documentation of their numerous works. Text in English and German AUTHOR: SAUERBRUCH HUTTON was founded in 1989 as an international agency for architecture, urbanism and design. The office has been awarded numerous national and international prizes. Built works range from the Brandhorst Museum in Munich to the Federal Environmental Agency in Dessau. Approx. 1100 illustrations
