Jahrhundertelang schloß Japan sich kulturell von der Außenwelt ab, erst 1868 änderte sich das – Kaiser Mutsuhito rief die Meiji-Reformen aus und schickte Gelehrte aller Art nach England, Frankreich, Deutschland und Amerika, damit sie dort Technologie, politische Wissenschaften und Fremdsprachen lernten. In den Schulen wurde die westliche Kultur unterrichtet, die ersten Künstler reisten nach Paris, wo der Impressionismus seine Blüte erlebte. Kiyoki ist sechs Jahre alt, als sein Vater ihm sein erstes Messer schenkt, mit dem er die höchste Kunst des Noh erlernen soll: das Schnitzen jener Masken, ohne die kein Drama dieses jahrhundertealten Theaters denkbar wäre. Kiyoki aber merkt schon sehr bald, daß sein Herz und seine Hände etwas anderes wollen – malen. Sein Vater jedoch kennt nur das Holz des Schnitzers, »das Holz, das den Schmerz aufsaugt«, und so verläßt Kiyoki seine Heimat, um nach Paris zu gehen und dort als einer der ersten seiner Generation Künstler zu werden.
