Die farbigen Bilder von Fritz Kredel zeigen die jeweiligen Vögel bei ihrem kunstvollen Nestbau: Zaunkönig, Rotkehlchen, Weidenlaubsänger, Schwanzmeise, Goldhähnchen, Samtköpfchen, Gartengrasmücke, Sumpfrohrsänger und viele mehr. So vielfältig die Vogelgestalten, so verschiedenartig sind auch die Formen der Nester, die gebaut und hier gezeigt werden.

Hans Jakob Christoffel V. Grimmelhausen nació, entre 1620 y 1625, en Gelnhausen (Hesse). En 1634, su ciudad natal fue atacada por los croatas, y Hans Jakob hecho prisionero. Posteriormente sirvió como soldado y llegó a desempeñar el cargo de secretario del regimiento. Después de su matrimonio, celebrado en 1649, fue mayordomo y hostelero. Hacia los cuarenta y cinco años de edad abrazó la fe católica. A partir de 1667, Grimmelhausen fue magistrado en Renchen. Probablemente aquí inició su actividad literaria. Murió en agosto de 1676, convertido en un respetable ciudadano. Grimmelhausen es, sin duda, el narrador alemán más importante del siglo XVII. En su obra principal, "El aventurero Simplicissimus" (1668-1669), sigue exteriormente la tradición de la novela picaresca española en sus mejores ejemplos. Pero, a diferencia de sus modelos, no se limita a reunir diferentes personajes e hilvanar una serie de aventuras, sino que, con lenguaje recio, plástico y matizado de humor, relata, basándose principalmente en sus propias experiencias, la carrera del "puro necio" Simplicius. La vitalidad del mundo barroco que se refleja aquí, sitúa la obra por encima de la categoría de la típica novela picaresca y de aventuras.
