Seinem radikalen experimentellen Ansatz folgend, keine ästhetische Hierarchie in seinen Arbeiten zuzulassen, bewegte sich Moholy-Nagy souverän zwischen Malerei, Fotografie und Film und definierte sich gleichzeitig als Maler und als Fotograf. Für die Wertschätzung der Fotografie, die als neues Medium bis dahin noch nicht als Kunst angesehen wurde, lieferte er einen wesentlichen Beitrag. Der Band schenkt einen hervorragenden Einblick in das Leben und Werk des Avantgardekünstlers.

Volume 1 begins with the very first permanent images (Nicéphore Niépce's 1827 8-hour-exposure rooftop picture and Louis Daguerre's famous 1839 street scene) and takes the reader up through the avant-garde photography of the 1920s.
