Unter dem Pseudonym James Herriot verfasste der 1916 geborene britische Tierarzt James Wight unzählige warmherzige Tierarztgeschichten. Er wuchs in Schottland auf, studierte in Glasgow Tiermedizin und erhielt eine Assistentenstelle in den Nord Yorkshire Dales. Sein Sohn übernahm später die väterliche Praxis, während seine Tochter Ärztin wurde. James Herriot starb am 23. Februar 1995 in Thirsk/Nordengland.
