Rian Malan, Jahrgang 1954, entstammt einer alten burisch-hugenottischen Familie, die seit über dreihundert Jahren die Politik Südafrikas mitbestimmt. Aufgewachsen in einem abgeschirmten Villenviertel Johannesburgs, protestierte Malan früh gegen das herrschende System und berichtete als Polizeireporter über das, was sich in den Townships ereignete.
