In den letzten Jahren sind Fragen zu Demokratie und Demokratiequalität in Österreich wesentliche Themen der innenpolitischen sowie politikwissenschaftlichen Diskussion geworden. Das Buch analysiert einige ausgewählte Politikbereiche bezüglich ihrer Demokratiequalität: politischen Wechsel und Wettbewerb, Parlamentarismus, politische Partizipation, Auswirkungen des EU-Beitritts, Geschlechterdemokratie und politische Erwachsenenbildung. Es werden jeweils folgende vier systematische Fragestellungen behandelt: (1) Wie werden Demokratie und die (theoretischen) Kriterien für Demokratiequalität definiert? (2) Wie sind Zustand und historische Entwicklung von Demokratie und Demokratiequalität beschaffen und wie sind sie gemäß den Kriterien für Demokratiequalität zu bewerten? (3)Welche aktuellen Reformen und/oder Veränderungstendenzen von Demokratie und Demokratiequalität zeichnen sich ab? (4) Was sind mögliche beziehungsweise wünschenswerte (längerfristige) Entwicklungsperspektiven von Demokratie und Demokratiequalität - auch vor dem Hintergrund der Kriterien für Demokratiequalität? Das Buch schließt mit einem , Do-it-yourself-Audit' sowie Reflexionen zur Demokratiequalität.
