Das mittelalterliche Weltbild war ein klar strukturiertes, hierarchisches System, ausgerichtet auf die Erde und die Menschen. Diese geozentrische Sicht geht auf antike, vor allem griechische Vorbilder zurück; neben Platon und Aristoteles spielte vor allem Ptolemäus eine wichtige Rolle. Interessant ist dabei die zeitversetzte Rezeption von Ptolemäus in islamischer und christlicher Welt: Während die antiken Autoren im 9. Jahrhundert bereits annähernd vollständig ins Arabische übersetzt wurden, finden im lateinischen Westen erst ab dem 12. Jahrhundert, im Zusammentreffen christlicher und islamischer Kultur in Spanien, die antiken Schriften als Übersetzung aus dem Arabischen im christlichen Abendland Verbreitung. Der reich illustrierte Band sucht nachzuvollziehen, inwiefern antike Vorstellungen das mittelalterliche Weltbild geprägt haben. Anhand zahlreicher Beispiele zeigt er, wie sich das Bild der Welt im lateinischen Abendland und im arabischen Orient entwickelte und welchen Niederschlag es hier wie dort in Karten, insbesondere Weltkarten, fand.
