Der mittelamerikanische Kulturraum erstreckt sich über ein großes, in sich sehr unterschiedliches Gebiet: Er umfasst die Staaten von Zentral- und Südmexiko, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador und teilweise Honduras, Costa Rica und Nicaragua. Hier entwickelten sich von 2500 v. Chr. bis 1521 n. Chr. Dutzende verschiedener Kulturen, deren Heterogenität durch über 60 einheimische, noch heute in der Region gesprochene Sprachen bezeugt wird. Maya und Azteken sind die wohl bekanntesten der alten mittelamerikanischen Völker; jedes von ihnen entwickelte eine eigene künstlerische Tradition, die mit bedeutenden formalen Besonderheiten ausgestattet war und sich in ganz unterschiedlichen Kunstformen ausbildete. Dazu gehören neben der Architektur zum Beispiel das Modellieren und Bemalen von Keramik, Skulpturen aus Stein, Holz, Knochen und Muscheln, die Wandmalerei, die Bearbeitung von Gestein, Halbedelsteinen und Edelmetallen sowie Textilarbeiten.
