Der Roman schildert im historisch authentischen Rahmen einen der letzten großen Aufstände der Aborigines gegen die Vorherrschaft der Europäer, auf deren Seite sich Billy Dixon, ein eben aus England eingewanderter Polizist, besondere Verdienste erwirbt. Sein erbitterter Widersacher ist der auch unter seinen Stammesbrüdern gefürchtete Riese Elmaru. Und doch sind es nicht diese beiden, die letztlich den Kampf unter sich ausmachen. Es erstehen andere, mächtigere Protagonisten in diesem blutigen Ringen der Kulturen, in welchem die überlegen bewaffneten Europäer auch das Klima und die ungewohnte Topographie gegen sich haben. Im Moment der Entscheidung spielen sie eine untergeordnete Rolle, und staunend stellt man fest, dass Australien heute ohne manchen punktuellen Zufall völlig anders aussehen könnte.

Francouzská verze úspěšného historického románu australského autora, napsaného originálně v esperantu pod názvem "Flugi kun kakatuoj", teprve poté anglicky v USA. Pojednává o invazi a okupaci západní Austrálie anglickými přistěhovalci a o životě a smutném osudu tamních původních obyvatel. Do francouzštiny přeložila Ginette Martin. Odehrává se v posledních desetiletích 19. století, kdy evropské mocnosti nezadržitelně kolonizují ostatní světadíly. V britské kolonii Západní Austrálie evropští přistěhovalci ignorují práva domorodců, vypuzují je z jejich tradičních území nebo zabíjejí, případně je nutí bezplatně pracovat na svých nově založených statcích. Na tomto pozadí se odehrává napínavý příběh naivního a slušného anglického přistěhovalce, který se spřátelí s talentovaným mladíkem z kmene Banubi. Ale rasová nenávist je od sebe roztrhne. Po obětování svého bílého přítele se Jangabara stane velitelem kmene Banubi a daří se mu na několik let odolávat invazi bělochů. Nakonec je ale zrazen vlasními lidmi a vše končí tragicky.
