    Hilda Graef, de origen alemán con ascendencia judía y protestante, encontró su camino hacia la Iglesia Católica a través de los escritos de Tomás de Aquino, San Juan de la Cruz y G.K. Chesterton. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Graef huyó a Londres para escapar de la amenaza del nazismo. Escribiendo desde una buhardilla que era frecuentemente sacudida por las bombas, desarrolló una perspectiva única moldeada por sus experiencias. Más tarde se mudó a Oxford, donde continuó sus actividades académicas.
