Der ursprüngliche Titel, Gracie Lindsay, entspricht dem Namen der jungen Frau, deren Leben die Handlung des Erzählens bildet. Dennoch ist die Hauptfigur der Onkel von Gracie, ein fünfzigjähriger, kinderloser protestantischer Pastor einer kleinen schottischen Gemeinde. Lékař by měl být poctivý, nezištný a hlavně by měl vnímat pacienta jako člověka. Člověka, kterého je třeba uzdravit na těle i na duši.
