      Art in Japan 1615-1868

The Western understanding of traditional Japanese art is almost wholly based on works from the Edo period, an era of splendor and innovation in the arts. One hallmark of Edo art is the lack of distinction between "high art" and "craft": an artist was as likely to paint on lacquer, ceramic, or textile as on paper or silk. This gorgeous book presents examples of Edo art in all media and across social boundaries -- from paintings of nature and city life on gold-leaf screens to wood-block images of Kabuki actors and courtesans, from Zen paintings and calligraphy to spectacular helmets and armor for the samurai, from brilliantly colored porcelains to textiles made for Noh theater, Kyogen comedy, and affluent women of the merchant class.Works are grouped thematically into such areas as festivals, warrior arts, religious beliefs, travel, play, and courtly traditions, and essays written by experts in the field address these various themes, placing the works in the context of the times. The book also provides entries on the individual objects reproduced.

Famous across Europe and America, recipient of the highest possible honours in Germany including the order of the Black Eagle and elevation to nobility, admired by Degas as 'the greatest living master', Adolph Menzel was perhaps the greatest German painter of the late nineteenth century. In this splendidly illustrated book - the only comprehensive volume on Menzel in English - photographs of the artist and contemporary Berlin accompany reproductions of hundreds of his paintings and drawings. Menzel specialists and art historians contribute chapters on his life and art, his visits to France, his critical reception, relevant social and historical background, and different approaches to his work.Until recently, Menzel's many paintings and drawings were separated from one another in collections on either side of the Berlin Wall. Now, in the wake of reunification, the Berlin Museums have put together the most extensive Menzel exhibit since the retrospective that followed his death in 1905. This book is the catalogue for the exhibit that had its debut at the Musee D'Orsay in Paris (April 15 to July 28), travels to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. (September 15, 1996 to January 5, 1997) and returns to Nationalgalerie in Berlin (February 7 to May 11, 1997).

Venice, renowned for its artistic legacy in the eighteenth century, is explored in this beautiful book that delves into the diverse range of arts from this vibrant period. It covers paintings, pastels, gouaches, drawings, watercolors, prints, illustrated books, and sculpture. The work opens with an introduction by Andrew Robison and a general overview of Venetian art by Michael Levey. Esteemed scholars contribute essays that discuss the international appeal of Venetian art and key aspects of the era's creativity. Following the essays, a detailed catalogue showcases many of the finest works, featuring biographies and critical insights into the artists. The selection highlights the beauty, quality, and distinctiveness of Venetian art, including significant altarpieces by Tiepolo and Piazzetta that underscore the importance of grand religious themes. The book also presents exemplary history paintings, allegories, landscapes, architectural fantasies, decorative works, and portraits. Notably, it includes a rich array of graphic art, as many renowned painters, such as Marco Ricci and Canaletto, engaged in printmaking and book illustration, often expressing greater creative freedom in these mediums.
