Archaeology captivates, as evidenced by the visitor numbers at ancient ruins. Despite its societal and economic significance, the discipline is often viewed as an "orchid subject" that requires justification. This realization motivated the author to write this book. The foundation for one of the world's most prominent excavation projects was laid 120 years ago with the signature of Emperor Franz Joseph I, leading to the exploration of Ephesos. While this once-thriving cosmopolitan city now lies in ruins, archaeology has succeeded in bringing its past into the spotlight. Ephesos exemplifies the synergy between cultural tourism and regional development, revitalizing a desolate area that had been abandoned for two centuries. Today, Ephesos thrives, with 161 researchers from 18 countries working under Austrian leadership, uncovering spectacular finds and attracting nearly two million visitors annually. The authors present a fresh perspective on Ephesos, focusing on its economic role as an ancient trade hub and modern excavation site. The subtitle, "The Allure of Destruction," highlights that the exposed ruins embody this allure, which must be constantly maintained against environmental threats.
