This volume addresses the need to revisit the economic theories from the last two decades that have contributed to the development of a concentrated research agenda on nonprofit organizations. Long neglected as a topic of theorizing and empirical investigation by mainstream economics in particular, these initial theories of nonprofit organizations from the late 1970s and early 1980s continue to shape theoretical and conceptual efforts. Importantly, their influence extends beyond economics and informs sociological and politics science approaches to the set of organizations and institutions located between the market firm and the state agency as well. While the theoretical map of nonprofit research has expanded beyond these early attempts and now include several other major theories such as stakeholder approaches, supply-side or entrepreneurial theories, institutional theories and comparative approaches. This work suggests that it is time to take stock and reexamine some of the basics from which these economic theories operate. This work will be essential to those in the nonprofit sector, organizational management and economics, political scientists and other researchers working with the nonprofit and voluntary sector.

East-Central Europe is about to bring its welfare reforms to the European Union. Nevertheless, in the course of the Accession, one could hardly fix the European standards of social policy or examine to what degree the newcomers may have approached them. Evidently, there has always been a variety of welfare regimes in the EU. Moreover, today's experts in post-communist countries do not find stable policies and institutional arrangements in the West but rather another reform process, the "domestication" of the classical welfare states. These issues are addressed by the contributors of this volume, leading representatives of their professions, in an unprecedented way. In avoiding the convenient cliche

Many scholars, policy-makers, and especially activists have begun to use the term "global civil society," yet it remains highly contested and under-researched. This Yearbook , a landmark publication, discusses and clarifies the mapping, measuring, and examining it on a yearly basis. The conceptual chapters, comprehensive case studies, and comparative empirical data make it an essential volume for researchers in a number of disciplines, including economics, political science, anthropology and sociology, international law, and international relations.
As evidenced by the immense global mobilization against the war on Iraq, which arguably influenced the actions of government leaders, global civil society is now established as a major player on the international stage. This yearbook is the standard work on the topic.
