Following Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union, the leadership of the newly established Independent State of Croatia sought to join the fight against Bolshevism, leading to the formation of the Croatian Legion with approval from Hitler. This unit, comprised of volunteers from all branches of the Croatian Armed Forces, included the 369th Reinforced (Croatian) Infantry Regiment as its ground component. The legionaries took part in significant World War II battles, such as the first battle of Kharkov, Operation Fridericus, Plan Blau, and the brutal struggle for Stalingrad, where they were the only non-German unit to attack the city. Initially seen as an honor, this distinction came at a devastating cost, as many Croatian soldiers lost their lives in Stalingrad, and the remnants of the unit were captured months later. Two sergeants managed to save the regimental archive, which included war diaries, daily orders, and combat reports, providing a unique resource for this work. The book delves into the Regiment's origins, training, and battles, offering a distinct perspective on the Eastern Front through the experiences of a foreign volunteer unit.
