A systematic program of archaeological research at the Hellenistic and Roman city of Aphrodisias in southwest Turkey was begun in 1961. This program focused on large-scale excavation of the central monuments of Aphrodisias, a prosperous town of ca. 10,000 inhabitants, with spectacular results.
