This work first appeared in French in 1918 and was translated into English three years later. As noted by his son Émile in the preface, the journals offer an illuminating self-portrait of Gauguin, highlighting his goodness, humor, insurgent spirit, and disdain for hypocrisy. These candid reflections encompass his views on fellow artists in Paris, his tumultuous relationship with Van Gogh, and the allure of Polynesian women, while also shedding light on his challenging life in the islands. This facsimile reproduces the first American translation from a rare 1921 limited edition, featuring full-page sketches by Gauguin, providing unique insights into both the man and the artist. Elle aussi est une sauvage, elle me comprendra..." Paul Gauguin entama la rédaction du Cahier pour Aline en décembre 1892, lors de son premier séjour à Tahiti. " Ce cahier essentiellement philosophique, écrit d'un moraliste au moins autant que d'un peintre ", comme le décrit Philippe Dagen dans sa préface, ne parviendra jamais à Aline, la fille tant aimée, qui mourut d'une pneumonie foudroyante en 1897 à l'âge de 19 ans.

V určitém smyslu není; přesto je to spis důležitý, protože charakteristický. Auf der Insel Hiva Oa beginnt Gauguin Vorher und Nachher niederzuschreiben – einsam und bereits von der Krankheit gezeichnet. In locker aneinander gereihten Erinnerungen und Reflexionen, unterbrochen von erregten Einwürfen und lebhaften Beschreibungen, berichtet er von den Jugendjahren in Lima, seinen Fahrten zur See, den Aufenthalten in der Bretagne und auf Martinique. Paul Gauguin beschreibt das Zusammensein und die gemeinsame Arbeit mit Vincent van Gogh in Arles und schildert die Entstehung von dessen furchtbarer Nervenkrise. Immer wieder klingen in Gauguins Erinnerungen Zorn und Trauer über seine zerrüttete Ehe und den Verlust seiner Kinder durch, die fern von ihm in Kopenhagen leben. Oft frech und direkt erscheinen Gauguins Bemerkungen über seine berühmten Zeitgenossen, über Pissarro, Degas und Strindberg. Das erhoffte 'Paradies' in der Südsee hat Paul Gauguin nach seiner Flucht aus Frankreich nicht finden können – auf der Seite der Eingeborenen kämpft er gegen die Kolonialherren. Nur sechs Wochen nach Vollendung seines Manuskripts stirbt Gauguin am 8. Mai 1903.
