      Los ensayos aquí reunidos se proponen como complemento de la célebre obra de Rudolf Otto Lo santo. Lo racional y lo irracional en la idea de Dios (1917). Su origen está en los apéndices que el autor fue añadiendo a las sucesivas ediciones de la obra y que quedaron finalmente desgajados de ella. A ellos se suman otros trece trabajos. Todos se encontraban todavía inéditos en castellano. El objetivo general del libro es aclarar el elemento de lo numinoso con ejemplos tomados de la experiencia religiosa, mostrar su importancia para el culto y la vida religiosa y, desde ahí, arrojar luz sobre conceptos religiosos como los de pecado, carne y espíritu, perdición y necesidad de redención en el cristianismo. Destacan en este sentido los textos dedicados al Maestro Eckhart o a Lutero, sin olvidar los que tratan de temas orientales como la imaginería budista o el zazen. En controversia con las teorías naturalistas de la religión, y recurriendo a ejemplos de lo que Wilhelm Wundt denominara «animismo», Otto intenta probarque toda teoría de la religión que prescinde de lo numinoso está condenada al fracaso, pues en él se nos da, ya que no la esencia plena de la religión, sí al menos su a priori objetivo, que es su condición de posibilidad en general y, con ello, la condición de posibilidad de una historia de la evolución de la religión.
