Colin Dennis Garratt

This is Colin Garratt's third book in the "Last Steam Locomotives of the World" series. It provides a superb visual survey in full color of the steam locomotive in Southern Africa. Garratt personally explored the lines he writes about, from the busy industrial lines of the gold mines of to the historic East Africa Railway, from a quiet spell in the Karroo Desert to the railways of Nairobi. Covers what were then South African Railways, Rhodesia Railways, and the East African Railway in Kenya and Tanzania. About half the book is photos and the other half is an excellent description of the steam railways -- their atmosphere and the character of the countries -- that is based on a serious technical authority on locomotives and an affection for the locale. Invaluable to both the railfan and historian of any of these countries.

The steam locomotive was possibly Britain's greatest technological gift to the world. This book is not only a celebration of British world pre-eminence in railway pioneering, but a magnificent record of the surviving working British steam locomotives to be found around the world, lovingly captured in the twilight of their lives by the skilled and patient lens of Colin Garratt. This book breaks new ground for the growing numbers of people interested in the British steam locomotive industry, and demonstrates the tremendous importance of the industry over 150 years, and the significant part it played in the Industrial Revolution.
