A jealous girlfriend trips on acid. A traumatized mother attempts to masturbate; a spa worker is challenged to take control of her fate. A haunted jeep parks in front of student housing. A sex worker grows wings; a hitchhiker is picked up by someone she never expected. Welcome to the Big City, where anything can happen...and very often does.In this debut collection from C E Hoffman, explore the humanity of sex workers ("whores") and people who are proudly sexual ("sluts"). Each story questions stereotypes that are long out of date, merging horror with heartache, and magic with the mundane.

    • 'Tenacious, sexy, effervescent, doggedly hopeful, and endlessly charming, with characters to root hard for and an irresistible voice - I completely adored it' Casey McQuiston, author of Red, White and Royal Blue Enemies. Rivals. Teammates. It's going to be a hell of a season.Gene Ionescu is content to play in the minor leagues. He's seen teammates get their big breaks, but as a gay trans man in the world of competitive baseball, he's unlikely to share the same destiny. When Gene's long-time rival, Luis Estrada, is unexpectedly drafted onto Gene's team, everything changes. Luis is standoffish, talented and inconveniently gorgeous, and - to add insult to injury - his arrival puts Gene's role on the pitch in jeopardy. This means war.The two men can barely get through a game together and the whole team suffers. But when Luis surprises Gene with a softer side to his haughty demeanour, Gene offers an olive branch. Soon they discover that their chemistry on the pitch might lead them all the way to the playoffs. And their chemistry off the pitch . . . well, that could be enough to change the game for ever.

    • This unique edition, translated by critically-acclaimed translator Andrew Brown, is one of the earliest examples of the classic murder mystery and it has been an inspiration for a host of thriller and crime writers.

      Mlle de Scuderi
    • E. T. A. Hoffmann is seen as a pioneer of both Romanticism and fantasy literature, and his novella, Mademoiselle de Scuderi: A Tale from the Times of Louis XIV is often cited as the first ever detective story. Hoffman's story 'The Sandman' provided both the inspiration for Leo Delibes's ballet Coppelia, and the basis for a highly influential essay by Sigmund Freud, called 'The Uncanny'. Indeed, Freud referred to Hoffman as the "unrivalled master of the uncanny in literature." Many of the demonic and thriller stories, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

The Sandman (Fantasy and Horror Classics)

    • Professor Hoffmann was the first in recorded history to attempt to record magic in an encyclopedic fashion beginning with his "Modern Magic." The material in this book [and others he wrote] recorded the state of the art of magic of the late 19th century. The first edition of 2,000 copies were sold out in seven weeks. Most magicians at the time were upset with the exposure. But over time it became the "bible" for many would be magicians, and remains so today. It was rated as one of the "Ten basic books for a working library of conjuring".
