Zajímavý příspěvek ke zkoumání etiky, tentokrát z pohledu biologa. Autor jako zastánce teorie sobeckého genu se ve své knize pokouší nově definovat zlo za použití biologických termínů. My lidé se rádi vidíme jako něco lepšího než zvířata, fakt ale je, že jsme stále součástí přírody. První část knihy, „Temná strana přírody", ukazuje, že ačkoliv život a jeho prostředí spěje k vyváženosti, řádu, stavu „tak akorát“, zlo se v něm přesto vyskytuje. Je nevyhnutelné a vzniká tehdy, kdy dojde ke: ztrátě místa (když je něco přemístěno tam, kam nepatří, třeba králíci do Austrálie). Problém správného a špatného místa. ztrátě rovnováhy (přemnožení některého druhu). Dále se autor zabývá chováním živočichů z hlediska výhodnosti pro zachování genů, dotkne se vězňova dilematu i vzniku altruismu. Druhá a třetí část probírá lidskou povahu; na mnoha příkladech z historie nedávné i starší ukazuje, jak je výsledné chování složeno z geneticky optimalizované strategie pro zachování genů (být milí k příbuzným, neutrální ke známým a nepřátelští k cizím, hodně klamat) a kulturních hodnot, šířených jako memy. Zlo tedy nemůžeme hledat kdesi jinde, venku, nějakého ďábla, ale jen a pouze v nás. Jako naši nedílnou součást. Jungův genetický stín.
