Focusing on the phenomenon of intra-sentential code-switching, this study examines bilingual Italian/German children aged 1 to 5 in Hamburg, arguing that their language mixing should be analyzed similarly to adult mixing. It challenges previous assumptions by asserting that child grammar mirrors adult grammar, with no correlation between grammatical development and language mixing quality. The research suggests that mixing is a personal choice among children, influenced by performance factors during early language production.
