Der Tod des Freundes Alfred Le Poittevin, dem Flaubert Madame Bovary widmete, scheint nach einer persönlichen, intimeren Trauerarbeit verlangt zu haben. Zu den Notizen über den Ball für Zar Alexander II. im Juni 1867 hat Flaubert etwas anderes bewegt: Er plante einen Roman über das Leben unter Napoleon III. – ein immer wieder aufgeschobenes und letztlich nie finalisiertes Projekt. Am wenigsten autobiografisch scheint die Vita des Paters Cruchard. Cruchard nannte sich Flaubert auch selbst, in Briefen später an George Sand, der der Text auch gewidmet ist. Nach ihrem Tod unterschrieb er einen Brief an Sands Kinder: »Für Sie Cruchard, für das Menschengeschlecht Polycarpe, für die Literatur Gustave Flaubert«.

Im Jahr 1857 erschien Madame Bovary, der erste Roman von Gustave Flaubert, mit dem er seinen Ruhm begründete. Doch bereits zwanzig Jahre zuvor, im Februar 1837, hatte der Schüler Flaubert in einer kleinen Zeitung seiner Heimatstadt Rouen eine erste Erzählung veröffentlicht: die Geschichte des Buchhändlers Giacomo, der aus Liebe zu den Büchern sein Leben aufs Spiel setzt.

První povídka – Prosté srdce – je příběhem života chudé venkovské dívky. Legenda o svatém Juliánu Pohostinném je středověkou legendou, kterou viděl Flaubert zpodobenou na barevných oknech chrámu. Herodias zachycuje rozporuplnou situaci společnosti, v níž se zrodilo křesťanství. Poslední povídka je zpracováním biblického příběhu o krásné a kruté orientální tanečnici.

"Die Erziehung der Gefühle" (französischer Originaltitel: "L'Éducation sentimentale", in anderer Übersetzung "Die Erziehung des Herzens", "Die Erziehung des Gefühls", "Lehrjahre des Herzens") erschien 1869 und ist Gustave Flauberts letzter vollendeter Roman. Er gilt heute als einer der einflussreichsten Romane des 19. Jahrhunderts. Erzählt wird die schicksalhafte Geschichte von Frédéric Moreau, eines leidenschaftlichen, jungen Mannes, der nach Paris zieht, um sein Glück zu machen. Er ist ein schwärmerischer Romantiker, der an seinen Idealen festhaltend an der Realität scheitern muss. De 1840 à 1867, la vie fait L'Éducation sentimentale de Frédéric Moreau et de toute une jeunesse idéaliste qui a préparé dans la fièvre la révolution de 1848. Le roman s'ouvre sur des rêves exaltés et s'achève sur la médiocrité des uns et des autres. Entre temps, la vie s'est écoulée autour de Frédéric, qui semble n'avoir pas plus participé aux mutations de son temps qu'à l'édifice de sa propre destinée potentielle. Au cours de cette existence, Madame Arnoux, dont les apparitions sont autant de surgissements mystiques, tient lieu au jeune homme d'absolu insaisissable. Lui qui rêvait de terres lointaines et d'ouvrages romantiques déchirants dont il se voyait l'auteur génial, se retrouve, en guise de destination exotique, à Nogent, la ville de son enfance.
