Das Fluorid-Ion (F) ist die ionische Form des Elements Fluor, das zur Gruppe der Halogenelemente gehört und eines der am häufigsten in der Natur vorkommenden Elemente ist. Fluorid ist ein Mineral, das natürlicherweise in vielen Lebensmitteln und im Wasser vorkommt. Fluorid trägt zur Vorbeugung von Karies bei, indem es den Zahn widerstandsfähiger gegen Säureangriffe durch Plaquebakterien und Zucker im Mund macht. Fluorid wird wegen seiner antikariogenen und antimikrobiellen Eigenschaften in großem Umfang systematisch und topisch bei der Behandlung von Zahnkaries eingesetzt. Systemische Fluoride umfassen den Prozess der Einnahme, Verdauung, Absorption und Ausscheidung, während topische Fluoride nur eine lokale Wirkung haben.Eine primäre Methode der Fluoridverabreichung ist systemisch und wird künstlich in Wasser, Milch, Salz oder Nahrungsergänzungsmitteln bereitgestellt, die eingenommen werden müssen, um eine Wirkung auf die Zähne zu haben.
