This book examines ways to ensure that the rights, interests and concerns of young people are properly represented in Western democracies. One new proposal is the introduction of youth quotas in political institutions in order to counter the possible marginalization of young people caused by demographic ageing and, thereby, an overrepresentation of the interests of the elderly. The book explores key questions regarding the implementation of youth quotas from different perspectives, including philosophy, political science, sociology and demography. It examines whether youth quotas and other measures that give the young more voice and influence in political institutions are a good means for promoting the cause of intergenerational justice. In particular, it investigates how and if youth quotas can be used to ensure that the environmental interests of young and future generations are being taken into account. In addition, the book introduces an innovative model that would give a right to vote to minors without voting age boundaries. The book also discusses suffrage reforms through lowering℗ℓ the voting age in Western countries, as well as introducing methods especially aimed at raising the skills of children necessary for societal citizenship and empowerment of young citizens. The volume will help raise awareness and knowledge about the intergenerational implications of demographic changes in Western democracies, where ageing societies are increasingly turning into gerontocracies. It offers readers deep insight into how youth quotas in particular (and others forms of youth participation in general) might be efficient methods to ensure that younger generations are included in the political decision making process and other activities in society

Justice between generations is still not as prominent on any agenda as justice between rich and poor or men and women. For the first time, this three-part book explores the situation of young people of today in comparison to their direct predecessors. The first part, The Financial Situation of the Young Generation in a Generational Comparison, deals with this generation's financial standing; the second part, The Rush Hour of Life, examines their time restrictions. Both are considered from a life-course perspective. The third part, On the Path to Gerontocracy?, addresses the demographic shift in favor of the elderly in aging Western democracies.

Intergenerational justice has been achieved if the opportunities of the members of the next generation to fulfill their needs are better than those of the members of the preceding generation. For this, each generation ought to leave for the next generation an amount of resources is at least equal to its own amount. The book deals with the complex relationship between intergenerational justice and demographic change and is characterized by its interdisciplinary approach. The authors come from a multitude of professional backgrounds and from several countries. This illustrates the implications of the demographic shift from many different perspectives. The book deals not only with the aspects of economic policy but also with environmental, societal and philosophical issues. The comprehensive volume is composed of five sections that pinpoint demographic trends, examine the impact of demographic changes on key indicators, investigate the relationship between key indicators and intergenerational justice, scrutinize population policies, and finally propose ways to implement long-term thinking on these issues.

Die aktuelle Pandemie verdeutlicht, wie unvorhersehbare Risiken zukünftige Generationen und deren Lebensgestaltung erheblich beeinflussen können. Dabei werden sowohl menschengemachte Risiken wie Atomwaffen und starke KI als auch natürliche Gefahren wie Naturkatastrophen betrachtet. Diese Herausforderungen wirken sich zunehmend auf das politische Handeln aus und verändern unser Gesundheitswesen, Wirtschaftssystem, Arbeitsmarkt und Bildungssektor. Das Buch bietet einen umfassenden Überblick über diese Risiken, deren ethische Bewertung und mögliche Strategien zu deren Bewältigung.

Das Buch analysiert die Tendenz demokratischer Systeme, kurzfristige Vorteile über langfristige Konsequenzen zu stellen, was als "presentism" bezeichnet wird. Es wird aufgezeigt, dass bestehende Demokratiebegründungstheorien wie die liberale, pluralistische und partizipatorische keine Lösungen für dieses Problem bieten. Zudem wird die traditionelle Gewaltenteilung als möglicherweise veraltet kritisiert. Der Autor plädiert für die Schaffung einer neuen institutionellen Ebene, die die Interessen zukünftiger Generationen in gegenwärtige politische Entscheidungen integriert, um die Demokratie zukunftsorientierter zu gestalten.

Die Begriffe „Nachhaltigkeit“ bzw. „nachhaltige Entwicklung“ machten in Rekordzeit weltweit Karriere: die großen Weltkonferenzen der letzten Dekade beschworen sie, Koalitionsvereinbarungen in Bund und Ländern erklärten sie zum Leitbild der deutschen Regierungspolitik; in Presse und Internet sind sind sie ständig präsent. Aufgrund der breiten öffentlichen Resonanz wundert es wenig, dass sich ein neuer Forschungszweig, die Nachhaltigkeitsforschung etablierte. Hier ist die vorliegende Studie einzuordnen.

Der Band versammelt Beiträge, die sich aus empirischer und normativer Sicht mit den Formen und Bedingungen der politischen Partizipation junger Menschen beschäftigen. Neben einführenden und systematisierenden Beiträgen behandelt der Band die Themenfelder Wahlrecht für Minderjährige, Internetbeteiligung/E-Partizipation junger Menschen, Jugendquoten sowie aktuelle Fallstudien zur politischen Beteiligung junger Menschen in Baden-Württemberg. Die Beiträge des interdisziplinär angelegten Bandes wurden etwa zur Hälfte von erfahrenen Expertinnen und Experten aus Wissenschaft und Praxis, zur Hälfte von Studierenden der Universität Tübingen beigesteuert.
