    Robert Carlyle Byrd fue un Senador de los Estados Unidos por Virginia Occidental, miembro y exlíder del Partido Demócrata en el Senado. Byrd fue senador desde el 3 de enero de 1959 hasta su muerte, y fue el senador con el mandato más largo, así como el miembro con el mandato más largo en la historia del Congreso. Fue el Decano del Senado desde 2003 hasta 2010. También fue el miembro de mayor edad del Congreso en ese momento de su fallecimiento (Strom Thurmond fue el de mayor edad en servir en la historia del Congreso), y fue la primera persona en servir ininterrumpidamente durante medio siglo como senador.
