Maria Montessori (Chiaravalle, 1870 - Noordwijk, 1952), estudió matemáticas y ciencias en una escuela para chicos y posteriormente decidió hacer la carrera de medicina graduándose como la primera mujer médico de Italia. Posteriormente se hizo conocida por su apoyo a los derechos de las mujeres y por el respeto a los pacientes de todos los orígenes. Trabajó en un psiquiátrico con niños discapacitados y pensó que, a través del juego y con cuidados especiales, mejorarían y aprenderían más. Con sus ideas revolucionarias y su actitud respetuosa, transformó el sistema educativo. Aunque murió en 1952, su legado continúa hoy en las escuelas Montessori de todo el mundo
