      Mary Ellen Chase was a prominent American educator and author, recognized as a key literary figure in early twentieth-century New England. She completed her bachelor's degree at the University of Maine and later earned a master's and Ph.D. in English from the University of Minnesota. Her teaching career spanned various locations, including Buck's Harbor, Chicago, and Montana, before she became an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota. Chase taught at Smith College from 1926 until her retirement in 1955, contributing significantly to academia and literature.
