The son of a lighthouse watchman on a tiny North Sea island, Jens is lonely; so he writes a letter with his picture on it, puts it in a bottle and lets the bottle float out to sea. It goes to Madagascar, Ceylon, China, Mexico, and Greenland, with pictures added by each child that finds it before it floats back to Jens.
