Román Malý Dobráček je pro tvorbu Julese Vernea naprosto netypický. Stojí za ním tklivý příběh sirotka tonoucího v bídě Irska poloviny 19. století, přičemž čtenář, který by nevěděl, že jde o Verneovo dílo, mohl by se domnívat, že čte jeden z románů anglického spisovatele Charlese Dickense.
